But this brand of historical fiction, I EAT。 IT。 UP。 I love our main character, Hazel, so much - her character is fantastic and adventurous and the best kind of heroine。 And I love Hazel and Jack together SO much; I was nervous with the introduction of Simon Ferris, the handsome Swedish doctor treating the King, but I'm pleased to say that I really loved where the story ended up going and I think it ended up being a great end to this duology - although I would love to read more from this world if more was to come! I really do think this sequel is just as great as the first, which is pretty unusual for a duology! I was disappointed in how long it took for a certain hero to reappear, but there is never a dull moment with the plot following Princess Charlotte, and the secret society of the Companions to the Death, so I can't complain too much! 。。。more

I loved the first book and couldn't wait to see what happened with Hazel and Jack。 I was a little disappointed that the story moved away from Hazel's home laboratory, but enjoyed the historical characters thrown in once Hazel gets to London。 Hazel even gets to work alongside another doctor, and Beecham makes an appearance as well。 All in all, a great sequel that fans of the first book are sure to enjoy。Thank you to the publisher for the review copy! Immortality by Dana SchwartzA horror love story that will last an eternity。Hazel Sinnett, a character I adore, returns to fight again for her right to be a doctor and surgeon in a man's world。 There are some squeamish moments when it comes to the actual practice of medicine and dealing with body parts/corpses which I loved。 Romance, mystery, horror, and royalty! It was fun to go on one more journey with Hazel。 All loose ties from the first book, Anatomy, are wrapped up and the ending is perfect。 Immortality by Dana SchwartzA horror love story that will last an eternity。Hazel Sinnett, a character I adore, returns to fight again for her right to be a doctor and surgeon in a man's world。 There are some squeamish moments when it comes to the actual practice of medicine and dealing with body parts/corpses which I loved。 Romance, mystery, horror, and royalty! Thank you Macmillan for the free arc via Netgalley。 Interesting sequel but not as good as the first book。 At times seemed dragged out。 Would have liked more action。 Interested to see where does Hazel’s story go next,

An amazing second half to the Anatomy love story! Dana Schwartz has crafted a beautiful gothic love story that has had me thinking what will happen next after reading each chapter。 Hazel Sinnet, the main character, had me empowered to become the best of the best in my field! LOL。 I truly did not want to stop reading this story and it was a breath of fresh air。 Highly recommend to all middle and high school students!

IMMORTALITY continues Hazel's story from ANATOMY。 The story begins with her new foray into medicine, house calls, where she helps the poor (and sometimes the rich) with their medical ailments。 She does not know what has happened to Jack after his hanging, but she hopes that the Immortality tincture worked。 After she helps someone medically for something that could be illegal, she is thrown in jail, where it seems she might stay forever - until she receives a royal reprieve to become the personal IMMORTALITY continues Hazel's story from ANATOMY。 The story begins with her new foray into medicine, house calls, where she helps the poor (and sometimes the rich) with their medical ailments。 She does not know what has happened to Jack after his hanging, but she hopes that the Immortality tincture worked。 After she helps someone medically for something that could be illegal, she is thrown in jail, where it seems she might stay forever - until she receives a royal reprieve to become the personal physician of Princess Charlotte。 As she works in the court, she will find herself caught up in political intrigue。What I loved: Ultimately, this is a satisfying conclusion to the duology that wraps things up reasonably well。 The ending has a finality that the first lacked, and it completes the main characters' stories in a way with which most readers will be satisfied。 The historical context was interesting and lessons about practicing medicine during this time can be found throughout。 Hazel is advanced for her age and time, but she studies carefully and wishes to impart her knowledge to others with the treatise she is writing。Themes including medical expenses and the financial burden these can bring, the value placed on lives from different socioeconomic levels, immortality, ethics in medicine, prosecution of physicians for caring for patients, and women's rights make this duology particularly thought-provoking。 These would work well for a book club or discussion group to delve into deeper。What left me wanting more: This sequel felt a bit windy and seemed to take its time to get on a path, which made it tough for me to keep reading。 It was easy to put down as it took a while to get into its stride。 In some ways, it felt superfluous to the first story, but it was nice to get the closure。 The romance felt like it took a backseat to other happenings, and it did not feel as strong as in the first book (though this is to be expected, since the relationship is already built)。 The story felt detached in places and seemed a bit less atmospheric than the first as a result。Final verdict: IMMORTALITY wraps up the story from the first book with a new medical adventure for Hazel。 Would recommend for fans of the first who want closure。Please note that I received an ARC。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

I loved this book as much as I loved Anatomy! I love that Dana Schwartz takes actual history and turns it into fiction。 It's especially fun when you know what she's talking about。 Actually, I listened to her podcast about Princess Charlotte right before I started reading this, not realizing that she would be a character in the book。 I really adore Dana's writing and the stories she tells are unlike any other that I've ever read。 I loved this book as much as I loved Anatomy! I was provided a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest reviewI loved Anatomy, the first book in this duology, up until the very end。 I suppose it’s not a spoiler now to say that the whole immortality tincture thing seemed to have come way out of left field there。 I had really been enjoying what was essentially The Knick, but from a woman’s perspective。 And then there’s Dr。 Beecham and the Tincture (which I very much wanted to call an elixir instead!) and Hazel ends up giving the via I was provided a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest reviewI loved Anatomy, the first book in this duology, up until the very end。 I suppose it’s not a spoiler now to say that the whole immortality tincture thing seemed to have come way out of left field there。 I had really been enjoying what was essentially The Knick, but from a woman’s perspective。 And then there’s Dr。 Beecham and the Tincture (which I very much wanted to call an elixir instead!) and Hazel ends up giving the vial to Jack as he’s about to be hanged (for Beecham’s crimes of course), but we don’t know for certain if he’s survived or not。 It all took a weird turn, so I wasn’t sure how the sequel would go。 I ended up really liking it! It still manages to feel grounded in history and science, in spite of the impossible premise。(view spoiler)[I will confess to hating the love triangle aspect though。 I know it’s right there in the subtitle: “a love story,” but I really didn’t give a crap about that part at all。 At least Schwartz stays away from the cliched “who will she choose?” dilemma。 Hazel clearly loves Jack, and merely likes and respects Simon。 I suppose Jack is a good partner for her, since he accepts her desire to have a career of her own (and Simon did as well - I kept waiting for a heel turn from him, but it never came)。 But I guess I wanted the “I choose me” moment over the “you are my one true love” moment。 (hide spoiler)] We pick up with Hazel back at Hawthornden, treating patients and working on a medical treatise for the common population。 She’s essentially finished her studies, but having never sat the final exam, she can’t call herself a doctor。 But given that she’s something of a curiosity, being a female surgeon, people come to her frequently enough that she can continue her work。 She’s still holding out hope that Jack may have survived the hanging, but she hasn’t had any communication from him beyond the “Find me in America” note。 When she treats a patient who was about to bleed to death after a botched abortion, Hazel is suddenly on the wrong side of the law, staring down a potential hanging of her own。 But at the eleventh hour, she’s summoned for an entirely different purpose - to be the personal physician to Princess Charlotte (granddaughter of King George III)。 The princess is the young, liberal hope for the country…just as soon as her mad grandfather and jerk of a dad are dead。 But Princess Charlotte’s health has been fragile since her bout with Roman fever (I’m fairly certain this was a plot point in the first book), and she recently had to call off her engagement。 Lots of other doctors have been unable to figure out what’s wrong with her, but maybe a lady doctor can crack the case!Hazel begins treating the princess and of course immediately gets swept up in court drama - including a possible romance with the doctor treating the king。 But she also receives another summons - this one to join a group called the Companions to the Death。 The Companions are an influential group of scientists and artists (including some familiar historical faces), and although Hazel is initially thrilled to be included in their number, she senses something darker is going on。 As I mentioned, I wasn’t wild about the love story portion here。 I felt like it brought the actual plot to a halt at times。 But I thought the historical and scientific aspects were fascinating。 Schwartz has clearly done the research (I confess I was hoping for a meatier author’s note! Perhaps in the published copy), and she manages to make a story that’s grounded in a pretty fantastical premise feel real to its time。 We learn more about the Tincture here, and how it works, but also about its limitations (for instance that although it keeps you from dying, it doesn’t keep your body from breaking down - which is part of why the Companions are so keen to enlist Hazel in their ranks)。 I do enjoy an author who can make magic seem like science! I also enjoyed the fact that even though there are definitely contemporary issues being addressed here (jailing someone who provides life-saving services, sigh), the characters still feel authentic to the time period。 Often in historical fiction - particularly YA and MG - the characters feel like they’ve time traveled from the 21st century。 Not the case here!(view spoiler)[Hazel does end up taking the Tincture so she can be with Jack forever。 She has a brief moment where she thinks maybe Beecham figured out how to reverse it, but nope。 He’s now posing as his own solicitor, so he’s still alive。 I liked the metaphor he uses at the end of stirring milk into tea - taking the Tincture has fundamentally changed their makeup。 Just like you can’t remove the milk and bring the tea back to its original state, you can’t reverse the effects of the Tincture…which is why Marie is living on as just a head。 Dark! (hide spoiler)](view spoiler)[I like that we hear what happened to Jack in the interim (also dark!)。 I sort of wish we’d spent perhaps the first half of the book with him instead。 We get maybe half a chapter, and it doesn’t feel like just an expository info-dump, but I would have enjoyed giving that story more weight。 But I suppose that ruins the surprise when he does eventually show up (although really, you had to see it coming)。 (hide spoiler)]As the end approached, I was concerned we were heading for surprise sequel territory, but without spoilers, the ending feels like a real ending。 I suppose there’s the potential to revisit these characters and this world, but it definitely feels complete。 。。。more

I enjoyed book number 2 better than the first book。 I want to thank Netgalley for this arc。 I was really invested in this book up until the last 20 percent of the book。 I guess it's because it did not end like I wished, but since the first book focused on the job of grave robbers and the use of bodies for science it makes sense。 I wish the main character Hazel would have gone a certain way, but I realize her obsession with James will not allow her to really have a relationship she deserves。 I di I enjoyed book number 2 better than the first book。 I want to thank Netgalley for this arc。 I was really invested in this book up until the last 20 percent of the book。 I guess it's because it did not end like I wished, but since the first book focused on the job of grave robbers and the use of bodies for science it makes sense。 I wish the main character Hazel would have gone a certain way, but I realize her obsession with James will not allow her to really have a relationship she deserves。 I did enjoy the new friends that Hazel made in England, and it did add to the story。 Also, this book does have LGBTQIA representation, and it does have an impact on the direction the book takes in the end。 Overall, I did enjoy this series, and that the story kept my attention, and the pace is very good。 I just wish that Hazel did not risk her reputation for the happiness of others。 。。。more

I love Immortality: A Love Story even more than I loved it's predecessor, Anatomy: A Love Story。 With a secret society, a love triangle I wasn't expecting, and a strong female main character, I finished this book in 24 hours and was completely engrossed in the story。 With the last book, the focus was on Hazel and her journey to proving herself as a surgeon, and to herself。 Here, she has already proved that time and time again and has more confidence in her abilities and herself when it comes to I love Immortality: A Love Story even more than I loved it's predecessor, Anatomy: A Love Story。 With a secret society, a love triangle I wasn't expecting, and a strong female main character, I finished this book in 24 hours and was completely engrossed in the story。 With the last book, the focus was on Hazel and her journey to proving herself as a surgeon, and to herself。 Here, she has already proved that time and time again and has more confidence in her abilities and herself when it comes to what she wants and how to obtain her dreams。 Now, she has become part of the royal household as private physician to Princess Charlotte after she experiences mysterious illness。 I loved this different focus。 It did not feel jarring, but a natural progression for a character that was stifled in her current position as an outcast in Scotland simply because she is a female surgeon。 She never sacrifices herself or her ambitions for anyone or to be more agreeable to fit in。 I thought the plot flowed seamlessly in this continuation of her story。 In my review of the previous book, I said the love story was really a love story between Hazel and herself, for all women who have had to juggle personal fulfillment and their ambitions with a society who tells them their value is to be what society says they should。, rather than between two characters。 This continues here in this book, but is more balanced with that traditional aspect, WITH a love triangle。 I really did love that there were characters out there who saw how truly amazing Hazel is and appreciated her for who she is。 I thought the author struck a great balance between these ideas, without sacrificing the message she previously established in Anatomy。Overall, I really loved and enjoyed this book。 Thank you so much to Dana Schwartz for writing this book, and Netgalley and Wednesday Books for the ability to read this novel in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
